How often does sleepbus operate?

sleepbus is run by Sleep Bus Ltd, 365 days per year; 8PM to 8AM. The operational hours have be chosen so that it fits in with community expectation and concern. sleepbus rolls in at 8PM each night, long after people have left work and then we leave by 8AM, before people return the next morning.

What is the sleepbus nightly schedule?

Here's how a typical sleepbus day looks:

  • 7:00pm - sleepbus depart depot to approved locations for service
  • 8.00pm - sleepbus arrives at the approved location
  • 8.30pm - Onboarding of guests commences
  • 10.00pm - Onboarding complete and the Caretaker conducts last checks
  • 6.30am - Wake up call for all guests
  • 6:45am - Offboarding of guests commences
  • 7:45am - Offboarding complete
  • 8:00am - sleepbus departs approved location
  • 9:00am - sleepbus reset process begins back at depot (cleaning, repairs, maintenance, checks etc)
  • 11:00am - Any sleepbus booked for site visits depart (Corporate engagement, School/University visits etc)
  • 5:00pm - All sleepbus are back in depot for spot checks

How can I undertake a fundraising event?

Can my organisation/business get involved?

We partner with corporations for matching programs, public campaigns, employee engagement and other fundraising ideas tailored to the business' market and brand. It is this support that makes it possible for sleepbus to do the work that needs to be done and allows us to always use 100% of public donations to fund sleepbus projects. see how

Are my donations tax-deductible?

Yes, any donations you make to sleepbus are tax deductible.

Will I receive a receipt for tax-deductible donations?

Yes, a receipt will automatically be emailed to you upon donation.

How do I organise a sleepbus in my local area?

Please speak with your local council about inviting sleepbus into your community. What we need from a supportive council is a parking location fitting the appropriate safety requirements and a permit to park sleepbus there 7 days per week from 8pm to 8am. That's it. Any council seriously interested in assisting those sleeping rough in their area with pathways out of homelessness, please contact us. We'll bring sleepbus out to you to take you through the process and how it fits in with DHHS programs and others.

Do you accept donations of clothes and furniture?

No, sleepbus are in the business of safe sleeps and do not accept donations of items such as clothes and homewares.

How do I cancel an automatic payment I have with sleepbus?

  1. Login to PayPal
  2. Click the Settings icon next to "Log out."
  3. Click the Payments tab, then click Manage pre-approved payments under "Pre-approved payments."
  4. Select the payment you'd like to cancel, then click Cancel.

What happens if I make a mistake when donating?

If you have made an error in the amount of your donation or made a duplicate donation, please contact us as soon as possible.

Should the refund be approved, any original receipt issued for the incorrect amount immediately becomes void and invalid. sleepbus will issue a new receipt where applicable. See our refund policy for full details.


How does sleepbus keep all guests safe?

2 years of research and development has gone into sleepbus, which includes consulting with Victoria Police, Melbourne Fire Brigade and security/health professionals. Some of the key safety measures include:

  • Caretaker/Security person is onboard at all times during the service period.
  • Each guest has their own individual sleep pod, equipped with a lockable door.
  • Each sleep pod and toilet is fitted with a monitored smoke detectori.
  • Toilets have been placed at the front of the bus (near Caretaker station) for increased visibility.
  • All internal/external area's of sleepbus have security camera surveillance monitored by a third party security person.
  • Guests, once on sleepbus, may leave at anytime, however, they can not return during the service period. This is for safety reasons and to allow people to enjoy a quiet nights sleep without people coming and going.
  • In the case of a disturbance, the Caretaker has control of the locks for each sleep pod.

What happens when the bus is full, 10 people miss out and begin making a disturbance outside?

As sleepbus is a bus, we can just drive away! All sleepbus’ have a secondly location available to move to in the event of a disturbance.


How do I volunteer?

If you would like to volunteer for sleepbus please register your interest through our website and a member of the sleepbus team will contact you to discuss further.

What skills or experience do I need to volunteer?

Volunteers do not require any special skills or experience. Just a passion for the cause is required.

Does sleepbus screen its employees and volunteers?

Yes, all sleepbus employees and volunteers will hold current Police Check and Working with Children check.


How are my donations distributed?

100% of your donation is allocated to a sleepbus project; that's our 100% Model promise to you. When you donate or fundraise, every dollar goes to building and maintaining a sleepbus project. Private donors fund our Charity operating costs, so 100% of your money can go towards getting people off the street.

Donations are non refundable. Should a specific location campaign not meet its target amount within a twelve month period all donations may be allocated to another sleepbus project or held until such time as the original project location eventuates. Donors can continue to track the allocation of their donation via their sleepbus account page.

How are funds raised?

Funds are raised via public donations, fundraising events and corporate sponsorship.

Are all homeless people homeless by choice?

Homelessness is almost no one’s choice. Nearly a quarter of the people who sought assistance from a homelessness service last year did so because of domestic and family violence. Financial difficulties and housing affordability also cause people to seek assistance. People lose their jobs and then lose their house; women flee domestic violence; people experience trauma and cannot cope; others struggle with mental illness. These experiences all contribute to homelessness and are not choices. Poor choices can contribute to homelessness, just as homelessness can contribute to making poor decisions, but outside circumstances strongly influence these choices.

What are the dangers facing Australia’s homeless?

People experiencing homelessness encounter violence, harassment and bullying in a number of ways, for instance, sexual and physical assault and abuse; racial and sexual discrimination; domestic and family violence; and exploitation (e.g. prostitution).

How many people are homeless in Australia?

On any given night in Australia 105,000 people are homeless. Of those, 6,314 are sleeping rough. And 1,073 of those are under 12. Made up by 67.6% Male and 32.4% Female.

Each sleepbus is fitted out with 22 sleep pods, providing 8,030 safe sleeps per year. To achieve our vision; we will build 319+ buses which will provide more than 2,000,000 safe sleeps per year right around Australia.
